Americans for Peace and Tolerance: Two Newton Aldermen Must Apologize

JRT Public Service, message from Americans for Peace and Tolerance:

Dear Friends,

As you may know, we worked very hard to stop the Aldermen of Newton from inviting a Guantanamo detainee to move into town. Our lobbying, phone calls, and presence forced the Newton Aldermen to unanimously shelve the invitation. However, it isn't enough to just sweep this matter under the rug. We are launching a petition requesting that the two Aldermen who initiated this ill-conceived endeavor apologize to the citizens of Newton for putting their safety in danger by trying to bring a jihadist to live among them. [Judaism Is Not Hatred]

I grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. In the Newton Public Schools, I was taught to fight back against racism and injustice and to respect human differences. I learned about the Civil Rights Movement as early as 3rd grade, which taught me that even the law, which is supposed to protect people, sometimes makes mistakes and criminalizes or imprisons the very innocent people it is supposed to protect.

Imagine how difficult it is to get someone out of Gitmo. Only someone who is completely innocent-- not only of the crime convicted, but of ANY sort of thing the US government disapproves of-- could possibly be set free.

Not every Muslim is out to get us, whether we are Jewish or otherwise. Believe it or not, there are plenty of Muslims living in Newton who have yet to blow up anything. Muslim children go to school along with Jewish children. Friendships develop, even. And THAT IS NOT SURPRISING.

If terrorists decide to attack Massachusetts, Newton is not going to be their first stop. Maybe Boston, or Cambridge, our intellectual center... but not Newton, because no one cares about Newton half as much as Newtonites like to think.

This petition is based off of fear and hatred, not compassion and understanding. If this man's lawyers, who know everything he's ever done, feel safe with him living in their community, so should the rest of us. Both Hebrew and Arabic involve greeting people by saying peace-- let's try and live up to that greeting.

Why was it necessary to burn synagogues? Why was it necessary to destroy greenhouses?
Just out of sheer hatred. As Reverend Eugene Rivers used to say: "On the street level, reality is a little bit more complex."

If you choose to be enlightened-you will rise above that level.Yes, the arab countries treat the palestinians poorly. But, consider those palestinians that actually live within the borders of Israel. They live producitve lives too and are considered citizens-they do not go out and kill. It is the poor and disadvantaged that are recruited as jihadists. They do not have education or opportunity. When given a chance to thrive-they will not succomb to the evil of jihad. Meet evil with love and it will be defeated. Americans have a duty, an obligation to hold themselves to a higher standard. We are a nation of law. Not a nation of hatred. Why not welcome this man? Why not change his life for the better? Newton welcomed Elena Bonner. Newton welcomed Corazon Aquino. Why do you want to stifle Newton as an enlightened community?
The tone of our exchange has evolved. You can see now that I stand against hatred. Please join me. Throw away hatred and racism. Rise above the ordinary and be extraordinary. Be enlightened.

Palestinians are treated better in Israel than in Arab countries as hard it is to admit. What happened to 2 million Jews from Arab countries? They were kicked out of their countries, came to Israel, were absorbed and live productive lives for generations. What happened to Palestinian refugees? How did their Arab brethren treat them? They locked them in squalid refugee camps to be used as live bombs against the Jews. How did Jordan treat Palestinians during Black September? They drowned them in blood. How does Syria treat them? They have half-legal status in Syria? How much money do Saudis spend on moving people out of the camps? Zero, nada. Saudi plutocrats bath in gold, while their Arab brothers live in misery. Oh yeah, Saddam Hussein cared, he paid $25,000 to families of suicide bombers. Palestinians and Jews are a convenient topic for Arab rulers to distract their people from real problems. Why do anything? Why ask questions? Blame it on the Jews. This is easy.

Too many innocent people were rounded up. They suffered torture. This is against the principles of this nation. The aldermen were trying to do a good deed. Do you remember how jews were treated during the holocaust. It sickens me when a group that has experienced such hatred would go out and do the same thing to others. Racism is racism no matter what. If this man were truly a jihadist he would have never been released. I am ashamed of my country and gauntanomo. If I were alive during wwII, I would have risen up against such evil that killed 6 million people. As for Israel, I do not deny that it has a right to exist. I do not like the fact that numerous palestinians -the vast majority innocent-have been relegated to nonhuman status. I do know the bible and frequently went to the hassidic center of boston for holy day events. Religion aside-follow the golden rule, treat others as you would have them treat you. Jihadists are actually few in number. The greater part of islam is about loving your neighbor and worshiping God. This is also true of judaism. I am enlightened. You most certainly are as well. Please wake up and amend your ways. Hatred in all forms is evil. Love is the only way to bring peace to the world. On 9/11 I was caring for my dying mother. I watched in horror as those planes hit. My first reaction was "WAR". My second reaction was why? Has a war in Afghanistan made us safe? No. Safety and peace only come from treating each other right. How about Russians-what if we did not let russian jews come to newton? It would not be right. So why not let a person come to newton and live in peace. Why not welcome this man as we all welcomed you?

I most certainly am a medical doctor and my lineage founded this great nation. Wake up and treat others as you would like to be treated. Your foul lies pollute this country. The U.S. backed Isreal. It was the first country to recognize the new nation. Start to behave as god would want you to behave. Shalom means peace. It does not mean exclusivity. I never threatened to kick jews from Newton. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is the golden rule. It is not anti-semitism to point out the wrongs in attempting to deny another human being the right to live in peace in a community. It is you , you who gives jews a bad name.

Dr. Moncure, who is neither a doctor nor has a last name Mocure, produced an nice sample of crazed anti-Semitic outburst that passes as an opinion in some corners of the internet. We'll keep it here for a little while as an exhibit.

1) Jews were given the Land of Israel by G-d who create heaven and earth and even such creature as Dr.Moncure.
Question? Why did Almighty create Dr.Moncure? Answer: To show that human beings have a choice -- they can live productive, enlightened lives, or they could fall as low as Dr. Moncure, the lowly anti-Semitism spewing desperate creatue.
2) No, you can not forbid Jews live in Newton. By the way, how about your own immigration status? If you talk to much, we'll send you back to the Dumpistan.
3) Notice to Jews -- see, this is what is going to happen if we allow conversations about the ownership of the Land of Israel. They start with a request for a Jew-free "Palestine" and end up with a threat to kick the Jews from Newton.
