The documentary feature film ORTHODOX STANCE, about Brooklyn's Dmitriy Salita, a 25-year old immigrant from the Ukraine, who is both a top professional boxer and a rigorously observant Jew, will have its World Premiere at the SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival in Silver Spring, Maryland at 8PM on Wednesday June 13, 2007.The film is produced and directed by Brooklyn filmmaker Jason Hutt, in association with BBC Storyville and Cactus Three Films, and received finishing funds from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture's Fund for Jewish Documentary Filmmaking.
"I couldn't be happier to premiere the film at Silverdocs-which in just 5 years has emerged as one of the top film festivals in the world," said Hutt. "And since I grew up down the road in Potomac, Maryland, I'm thrilled that so many friends and family members will be able to share in the excitement!"
To deal with the discomfort of immigration, Dmitriy Salita turned to boxing. To battle his fear of the ring, Dmitriy turned to God. To overcome the loss of his mother, Dmitriy dedicated himself to both. ORTHODOX STANCE is a portrait of Dmitriy and the colorful cast of characters-trainers, rabbis, and promoters-working together to support his rare and remarkable devotion to both Orthodox Judaism and the pursuit of a professional boxing title. Dmitriy is currently undefeated after 27 professional fights as a junior welterweight (140 pounds) and is promoted by Lou Di Bella and Di Bella Entertainment.
"We are delighted to be presenting the world premiere of ORTHODOX STANCE at SILVERDOCS as a highlight of the Beyond Belief program," said Sky Sitney, Director of Programming at SILVERDOCS. "The film stands out for the extraordinarily charismatic subject it introduces- Dmitriy Salita-and its refreshing exploration of faith and secular life."
Hutt stressed that you don't need to know anything about boxing to enjoy the film. "The film tells a universal story of a young man's search for meaning in life, and because of that, audiences will be able to understand and appreciate boxing and boxers like never before."
Storyville is the BBC's flagship international documentary strand, commissioning and acquiring the best in feature and standard length documentaries such as Spike Lee's When the Levee Broke and One Day in September.
Cactus Three executive produces high-end documentary films and non-fiction programming. Recent releases include Once in a Lifetime, a Miramax Films Release and Sketches of Frank Gehry directed by Sydney Pollack and released by Sony Pictures Classics.
SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival is in its 5th year and will screen over 100 films from June 12-17, just outside Washington, DC. Created through a unique alliance between the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel, SILVERDOCS honors the creativity and passion of independent filmmakers and the power of the moving image to alter our perspective and expand our world-view.

When is Dimitri going to fight again? Is an injury postponing his activity?

Dream Defense For Yo Paulie: Italian-Kosher War Against Salita At Garden!
Dream Defense For Yo Paulie: Italian-Kosher War Against Salita At Garden!

So where does "Magic Man" Paulie Malignaggi go from here? The Brooklyn lad, who floats like a butterfly and stings like a moth, is a natural opponent for Ricky "Blue Moon" Hatton assuming Hatton gets past veteran Jose Luis Castillo. That would be a big fight in either Manchester or Manhattan (Madison Square Garden).
"Let's do it in the Garden," a chirpy Lou DiBella said Saturday night, his face flush after his man's victory over mechanical Lovemore N'Dou.
Probem is Hatton thinks he"ll have bigger fish to fry meaning he hopes he can lure Philthy Rich Floyd Mayweather Jr. into a fight.
I spoke to DiBella Sunday and he was realistic about the situation.
"If Hatton beats Castillo, we know we're the bridesmaids behind Mayweather," DiBella said. "If Castillo wins, he has fewer options. He's not gonna fight Floyd again."
There are other Garden parties Yo Paulie could participate in. He and the revived Zabadiel Judah make for a classic Battle Of Brooklyn although I think Judah's power would put Malignaggi's lights out. Judah would also have a big edge in physical stregth. Unfortunately for DiBella and protege Paulie, the pickings are slim with the other world champs at 140. Junior Witter is a textbook boxer from the southpaw stance. There would be no firweworks if these two fought. Souleman M'baye (WBA) and Ricardo Torres (WBO) mean nothing at the box office or to the HBO paymasters.
"Right now, I'd say Judah is too strong," DiBella said, "but check back with me in a year's time."
Vicious Vivian Harris and Malignaggi would be a good fight stylicastically because of Harris' power and size. I doubt if Yo Paulie could keep Harris off of him for too long. And that would be a second Battle Of Brooklyn but DiBella is unlikely to be interested in Gary Shaw's man even if Harris takes Witter's WBC crown.
There is also a friendship factor. Paulie and Vivian are almost as close as heavyweights Ken Norton and Joe Frazier were. That relationship is the reason Smokin' Joe and Norton never fought.
"They are friends, good friends, and that's not a recipe for a good fight," DiBella said.
Shaw also has up and comer Timothy Bradley but he's not ripe yet. Dino Duva has spoiler Kendall Holt from nearby North Jersey but he has no ticket-selling or TV marquee value. DiBella rejects the idea of Malignaggi-Holt, Malignaggi-Demetrius Hopkins and Malignaggi-Witter as small money and bad style matchups for Yo Paulie.
So, harkening back to selling ethnic rivalries, how about the Italian-American against the Jewish kid in a possible third all-Brooklyn battle. Yes, what about Dmitriy Salita against Malignaggi at MSG?
DiBella is salivating for that one because it's an in-house promotion for him. It's a fight in which Malignaggi would be heavily-favored. It's a no-brainer except for one factor.
It says here that the cautious, some would say scared, Salita would turn it down. If he turns down a feather-fisted opponent in a world title bout where his promoter and the champ's are one and the same, it speaks volumes about the intentions of the likeable Salita.
"No doubt on that one," DiBella said. "That would be an enormous fight in New York City, enormous."
Then Luigi offered a "sleeper" matchup but an intiguing one nonetheless.
"A year from now, how about Paulie and Juan Diaz as Diaz moves up to 140 pounds."
Suddenly, Malignaggi World is a wonderful place.
