While I have become more ambivalent in recent years about the death penalty, which I used to support wholeheartedly -- precisely for the reason Prof. Levitin mentioned (unacceptably high error rate) -- my experience with criminal defense lawyers has been a largely negative one -- they are, to a large extent, hopelessly leftist, often amoral (if not downright immoral), and interested in money just as much as the "ambulance chasers" -- save for a few idealists. While this is their right, I tend to agree with Vera and Jeff Jacoby.

Yes, dear Lev, we do need more accurate DNA tests and other means of ascertaining the reliability of available evidence. This, however, has hardly anything to do with the substance of the criticisms of Kennedy and Patrick expressed herein.

Besides, assasinating the character of someone who is widely believed to be nothing short of an assasin himself (yes, I am talking about Ted Kennedy) should hardly come as a surprise. Kennedy's murky record leaves a lot to be desired, yet MA voters still seem to prefer wilful ignorance over doing their homework.

But then again, what does one expect in such a blue state, anyway? -- it's all too red (or pink).

Of course lawyers defend criminals. This is their job. Deval has developed an unhealthy attraction to cop killers and rapists and went beyond the call of duty in his support of people of this type. This is his right. This is also a very poor qualification for Governor. Deval wants to defend sex predators and killers. Fine. Kerry Healey wants to defend victims. I go with Kerry Healey.

Jacoby's article is itself an example of an unfair character assasination attempt. There is no shame for a lawyer to defend criminals, and to insist on better tests that can prove them not guilty. And if Patrick is against capital punishment, I am with him. Remember that 15% of people sentenced to death since 1976 have been later found innocent!
